Choosing an 8x8 in 2026
The quality of 8x8 cubes has improved significantly in recent years, even though the event is no longer held by the WCA. Several strong options are now available, catering to different preferences in size, magnetic features, and price.
The MoYu MeiLong 8x8 V3 and its magnetic version, the V3M (Ball-Core), represent some of the latest in this generation. The MeiLong 8x8 V3 offers a good balance of size, stability, and smoothness for those who prefer a non-magnetic cube. Meanwhile, the MeiLong 8x8 V3M adds a stronger anti-pop design and magnetic strength, making it a good value for beginners or value-conscious cubers.
For those who like a larger cube, the QiYi 8x8 remains a solid choice. The YuXin Little Magic 8x8 is also smooth but considerably larger at 88 mm, which may not suit everybody.
Prices for most of these non-magnetic cubes are all roughly £25, so the main considerations are size and personal turning preference rather than cost.
Among magnetic cubes, options have expanded beyond the original DianSheng 8x8 M, which while still decent, is more expensive at £52.95 and slightly larger. The QiYi 8x8 M stands out for being compact at 64.5 mm and surprisingly comfortable, feeling more like a 7x7 cube. It is widely regarded as the best overall 8x8 currently available.
| Cube | Magnetic? | Size | Price | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MoYu MeiLong 8x8 V3 | No | 65 mm | £24.95 | Most users (non-magnetic) | Best non-magnetic choice |
| QiYi 8x8 (Non-Magnetic) | No | 70 mm | £24.95 | Those preferring a larger cube | Good alternative based on size preference |
| YuXin Little Magic 8x8 | No | 88 mm | £24.95 | Fans of very large cubes | Smooth turning but notably large |
| DianSheng 8x8 M | Yes | 68 mm | £52.95 | Existing DianSheng enthusiasts | Decent but pricier than newer models |
| QiYi 8x8 M | Yes | 64.5 mm | — | Speed and comfort | Feels like a 7x7; best overall |
| MoYu MeiLong 8x8 V3M | Yes | 65 mm | £39.95 | First-time 8x8 solvers / value | Strong anti-pop; excellent value |
The choice ultimately depends on personal preferences surrounding size, magnetic features, and budget. The QiYi 8x8 M offers a unique experience with its small size and smooth magnetic turning, while the MeiLong 8x8 V3 series provides excellent performance at a more accessible price point. Larger cubes like the QiYi non-magnetic and YuXin Little Magic cater to those who prefer a more substantial feel in the hand.
